It’s proven to be a busy off season here at the Wolverines, with a birthday celebration coming up, expansion of a new squad and building of our current teams.
As we head into the 2017/18 season in just 2 days the Wolverines will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary as affiliated members of Gridiron West. Starting a team is no easy task, but keeping it afloat and continually building for 10 years is a testament to all of the work that has been put in by the team management, players and support staff over the years. So firstly I’d like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone involved since the inception of the club on behalf of all of the current members, and to all those who continue to work tirelessly both on and off of the field to keep the team going.
Going into our 10th year we’ve seen our numbers grow across both of the current
squads, continued establishment of our home ground at Forrest Park, Padbury and
expansion to a whole new squad. For the first time in WA Women will be competing
in full contact, full kit, full on gridiron. We’re not talking about the skimpy outfits or
lingerie football you’ve seen before. We are talking about gridiron played by
some of the toughest ladies you’ll meet.
Expanding to a new squad was by no means easy, introducing a group of ladies who
have never played before has been a steep learning curve but I have been amazed at
how well they have all done. It’s going to be an exciting first year!
This is a major event for women’s tackle football with the women’s game still in it’s
relative infancy even in the US so these girls will be making history.
Our first round will be held at Forrest Park Padbury and will feature all three squads
facing off against the Perth Broncos American Football Club – the Juniors kicking off at 12pm, Women at 2pm and Seniors at 4pm. It’s set to be a great day with a bake sale, canteen with sausage sizzle and pulled pork & slaw burgers, with the bar open from 3:30pm as well as other activities and three great football games.
We will additionally be inviting local aboriginal elders to conduct a ‘Welcome to
Country’ ceremony to allow us to recognize the original indigenous land owners and
hopefully receiving a blessing for our home ground and season.
It is with pleasure we announce that Liza Harvey MLA will also be in attendance to conduct the coin toss for the Women’s game at 2pm.
We’d love to see you there to show your support for the Wolverines and help us make
our 10th Birthday a great celebration!
We all hope to see you there!
